About

In few words:

A major exhibition on the history of costume creation at the Paris Opera since the opening of the Palais Garnier up until the present day.

To mark the 350th anniversary of the Paris Opera, celebrated in 2019, the National Costume Centre will be presenting an exhibition on the history of costumes created for our House since the opening of the Palais Garnier to the present day.
This vast panorama will revolve around the major aesthetic trends in staging throughout the 20th and 21st centuries. It will be illustrated by a selection of a hundred costumes and stage backdrops conserved either in the CNCS's collections, or at the Palais Garnier and the Opéra Bastille and drawn from opera and ballet creations along with the great repertoire successes. This large-scale theatrical fresco pays tribute to the creativity of the costume designers who have embodied this ever-evolving story, the expertise of the sewing workshops that accompanied them, as well as the various directors of the theatre who chose the productions and the artistic teams.
The Paris Opera is one of the three institutions that created the CNCS, whose collections hold more than 500 costumes from 400 of the House's productions, covering more than two centuries of its history.
