Opéra Bastille
from 26 janvier to 27 février 2026
“Eugene Onegin tells a love story that doesn’t work”. This is how Ralph Fiennes sums up the plot of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s opera, inspired by Pushkin’s work. A jaded young dandy, Onegin sets shy Tatiana on fire at first sight. Overcoming her reticence, she writes him a passionate love letter.
A masked ball may seem like the ultimate party venue, but its disguises and masks can also foster intrigue. Verdi's opera was inspired by a true historical event: the assassination of King Gustav III of Sweden at a costume ball in 1792. But before setting this event to music, Verdi had to contend with the censors, scandalised by the idea of representing a regicide on stage.
What is love today?’ asked Angelin Preljocaj in 1994, when he created Le Parc for the Paris Opera. Thirty years later, the world has continued to change, but his ageless ballet has travelled the world. In a French-style garden, the choreographer draws us into the seductive games of the Grand Siècle and the Age of Enlightenment, summoning up our classical musical and literary imagination: famous pages by Mozart, the Map of Tendre and Liaisons dangereuses.
No matter how much she warns them: “If you don’t love me, I love you; if I love you, beware”, Carmen enthralls and enraptures men, making them forget duty and reason. And so it is that a smitten Don José loses his honour for the sake of a flower thrown by a woman who knows no law other than her own desire.
In 1972, Richard Nixon visited Mao Zedong in China, marking the beginning of a rapprochement between the United States and China against the backdrop of the Cold War. Fifteen years later, American composer John Adams chose this episode as the subject of his first opera, a score marked by its rhythmic pulse, shimmering colours and intense lyricism.
