Raised to the status of myth by Shakespeare, the story of Romeo and Juliet had to await the 20th century before being embodied in a ballet thanks to the music of Sergei Prokofiev in 1935. In his production created for the Paris Opera Ballet in 1984, Rudolf Nureyev transformed this brilliant, energetic score into a sumptuous, particularly cinematic version.
Born from the cold waters of a lake, the water sprite Rusalka aspires to become a woman out of love for the prince with whom she is smitten. The witch who agrees to help her warns that her transformation will come at a high price: not only will she have to sacrifice her voice, but failure will mean eternal damnation.
She burns with life, attracted by the sparkle of diamonds and the glitter of the balls where Paris’ golden youth whirls and swirls. What is this woman’s name? Marguerite Gautier, the courtesan described by Alexandre Dumas fils in La Dame aux camélias? Or Manon Lescaut, the Abbé Prévost’s heroine?
