Artist in residence at the Academy since September 2025
Yvonne Sembene began her artistic training at the Berlin Dance Institute in contemporary dance before turning to choreography and stage direction.
She joined the Academy of the Paris National Opera in September 2025, where she has taken part in several opera productions as assistant stage director. She has collaborated on Claus Guth’s production of La Bohème, as well as on the new productions of Eugene Onegin directed by Ralph Fiennes and La Finta giardiniera directed by Julie Delille. In June 2026, she presented the stage direction workshop Lulu, Lucrèce, Carmen, Médée… mémoire de femmes with the artists in residence at the Academy.
She also collaborates with several institutions in Germany, including Kampnagel in Hamburg, Sophiensaele, Tanzfabrik, and Ballhaus Ost in Berlin, where she has presented the works OutBurningIn, CA$HBABY, and She Shanty. She has also created a choreographic work for the SOLD company at the Freiburg Theatre, as well as a performance for the festival Nearly Close Enough to Kiss at Theater Neben dem Turm. In 2025, she worked as assistant stage director on Tosca at the Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden.
In spring 2027, Yvonne Sembene will assist Barrie Kosky on his new production of Porgy and Bess at the Komische Oper Berlin.
