Biography

Ultz began his career as an actor and a teacher of the dramatic arts. He is also a director. 

For 15 years he was an associate artist at the Theatre Royal (Stratford East) where he produced numerous works from the Urban Music Theatre genre, including Da Boyz, Jean Genet’s The Blacks, Pier Piper A Hip Hop Dance Revolution (with the Boy Blue Entertainment Company)—a show that won the Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement or Performance in an Affiliate Theatre. He has directed nine opera productions for the Landestheater Niederbayern, including I Capuleti e i Montecchi and Die Lustige Witwe

At the  opera, he was responsible for the costumes and stage design for Gloriana (the Royal Opera House, the Hamburg Staatsoper), Lohengrin, Xerxes, Die Entführung aus dem serail, La Clemenza di Tito, The Rake’ s Progress (Bayerische Staatsoper), Ariodante (Aix Festival, DNO, Canadian Opera Company), Macbeth, Falstaff (Glyndebourne Festival ), Cavalleria rusticana / Pagliacci, The Bitter Tears of Petra von Kant, Powder Her Face, and Fennimore and Gerda (English National Opera). 

He works regularly with the directors Richard Jones and Martin Duncan. He has also created the sets and costumes for numerous stage productions in London and on Broadway, including Jerusalem, Choir Boy, The River, Wig Out! and Chicken Soup with Barley at the Royal Court, La Musica, Annie Get Your Gun, The Beauty Queen of Leenane and The Changeling at the Young Vic, Blood and Gifts and Ma Rainey’ s Black Bottom at the National Theatre. 

He received the OpernWelt Critics Award for his sets for Xerxes in Munich, a Tony nomination and an Olivier Award for Jérusalem and an Off-West End Award for The Beauty Queen of Leenane.
