Ted Huffman Mise en scène

Biography

Born in New York, writer and stage director Ted Huffman studied Humanities at Yale University and apprenticed at San Francisco’s Merola Opera Program. He was a MacDowell Fellow in 2017.

His most recent piece, created with his frequent collaborator, composer Philip Venables, is The Faggots and Their Friends Between Revolutions (2023), based on the cult book by Larry Mitchell and commissioned by the Manchester International Festival, Festival d'Aix-en-Provence, Bregenzer Festspiele, London Southbank, and Holland Festival.

Their previously work, Denis & Katya (2019), a true-story opera about voyeurism and the internet, has become one of the most frequently performed contemporary operas, with productions at Opera Philadelphia, Dutch National Opera, Music Theatre Wales, Opéra national de Montpellier, Theater an der Wien, Staatsoper Hannover, Theater Erfurt, Pittsburgh Opera, Finnish National Opera, and Aalborg Opera Festival.

Upcoming seasons include a new opera, We Are The Lucky Ones, with Venables for Dutch National Opera, his debuts at the Berlin Staatsoper Unter den Linden, Glyndebourne Festival, Opéra Comique, and the Ruhrtriennale Festival, and new productions for the Royal Opera Covent Garden, Opéra national du Rhin, and Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía.
