Sunghyun Lee Cello

Biography

Artist in residence at the Academy since September 2024

Born in South Korea, Sunghyun Lee began playing the cello at the age of six. He graduated from Sunwha Arts High School and the Korea National University of Arts before joining the Paris Conservatoire (Conservatoire national supérieur de musique et de danse de Paris), where he studies with Emmanuelle Bertrand.

In 2023, he was admitted to the Verbier Festival Orchestra, performing under the baton of Zubin Mehta, Daniele Gatti, Sir Simon Rattle, Charles Dutoit, and Klaus Mäkelä. He has also taken part in masterclasses with Arto Noras, Pieter Wispelwey, Valentin Erben, Peter Bruns, and Julius Berger.

Sunghyun Lee joined the Academy of the Paris National Opera in September 2024. He took part in the new productions of L’Isola disabitata conducted by François Lopez-Ferrer and La Finta giardiniera conducted by Chloé Dufresne. With the Orchestra of the Paris National Opera, he has performed in La Bohème conducted by Domingo Hindoyan, Un ballo in maschera conducted by Speranza Scappucci, and La Traviata conducted by Marta Gardolińska.
