American of Sri Lankan descent, Sean Panikkar has performed at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Royal Ballet and Opera, the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, the Salzburg Festival, and the Vienna State Opera. He has worked with numerous directors and conductors, including Jakub Hrůša, Philippe Jordan, Vladimir Jurowski, Barrie Kosky, Tobias Kratzer, Phelim McDermott, Ingo Metzmacher, Kent Nagano, Christof Loy, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, Sir Antonio Pappano, Esa-Pekka Salonen, Peter Sellars, and Krzysztof Warlikowski.
Recognized for his interpretation of contemporary operas, he made his debut at the Salzburg Festival as Dionysus in The Bassarids and has performed Gandhi in Satyagraha at the Los Angeles Opera and the English National Opera. Recent engagements include the role of Loge (Das Rheingold) in Munich and London, his debut in the title role of Peter Grimes at the Lyon National Opera, the role of the Bridegroom in the Australian premiere of Innocence by Kaija Saariaho at the Adelaide Festival, and the role of Leonard in the world premiere of The Hours by Kevin Puts at the Metropolitan Opera in New York.
