Ru Charlesworth Tenor

Biography

Ru Charlesworth performs on the world’s leading opera stages. Past engagements include Oronte (Alcina) at London’s Royal Opera House, the Ballet Master (Ariadne auf Naxos), Lysander (A Midsummer Night’s Dream) and Damon (Acis and Galatea) at the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence, Sellem (The Rake’s Progress) at the Glyndebourne Festival, Bob Boles (Peter Grimes) at the Opéra national de Lyon, the Prince (The Love for Three Oranges) and Jonathan (Saul) at the Komische Oper Berlin, Tamino (The Magic Flute) and Narraboth (Salome) at the Hanover Staatsoper, and Mozart’s Mass in C Minor conducted by Edward Gardner for Ru Charlesworth's debut with the London Philharmonic Orchestra.

Ru Charlesworth has also performed Bach’s Christmas Oratorio with the Noord Nederlands Orkest, Messiah with La Cetra Baroque Orchestra, the Narrator in Le Combat de Tancrède et de Clorinde with the Orquestra Barroca Casa da Música (Porto) under Laurence Cummings, and the Third Angel and John (Written on Skin by George Benjamin) with the Gulbenkian Foundation Orchestra.

In the 2024–2025 season, Ru Charlesworth sang the tenor solo in Messiah conducted by Damiano Michieletto, and took on two roles at the Glyndebourne Festival: the Witch of Endor (Saul) and Don Basilio (The Marriage of Figaro). Concert appearances include Haydn’s Paukenmesse with the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Vladimir Jurowski. English National Opera invited Ru Charlesworth back to sing Lord Darnley in a concert performance of Mary Queen of Scots, conducted by Joana Carneiro.
