© Pina Bausch Foundation - Ulli Weiss
Born in Poland, Rolf Borzik (1944–1980) studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Amsterdam (1963–1965) and in Paris (1965–1966), before enrolling at the Folkwang School in Essen, where he studied design and photography. It was there that he met Pina Bausch, who led him to work in dance — an intense collaboration that would give the Tanztheater Wuppertal its unforgettable stage landscapes and earn him his first international acclaim.
Rolf Borzik designed the sets, lighting, and costumes for: Fritz (1974, as assistant to Hermann Markard), Iphigénie en Tauride (1974, as assistant to Jürgen Dreier), Orpheus and Eurydice (1975), The Rite of Spring (1975), The Seven Deadly Sins (1976), Bluebeard (1977), Komm tanz mit mir (1977), Renate wandert aus (1977), Er nimmt sie an der Hand und führt sie in das Schloß, die anderen folgen (1978), Café Müller (1978), Kontakthof (1978), and Arien (1979). The partner of Pina Bausch, The Legend of Chastity (1979) was his final production.
