Bassoonist and conductor Rebekah Heller is a dynamic figure in the contemporary avant-garde. She has appeared as a soloist with the New York Philharmonic, the Nagoya Philharmonic Orchestra, and the New World Symphony, as well as at various music festivals around the world.
A strong advocate for the bassoon as a solo instrument, she has collaborated with dozens of composers to develop a new repertoire for solo bassoon, bassoon ensemble, and bassoon with electronics.
She has recorded three albums of contemporary bassoon works written specifically for her. As co-artistic director emerita (2018–2021) and long-time member of the International Contemporary Ensemble (since 2007), she has been involved in commissioning and performing hundreds of new works by a diverse international community of composers.
She is a member of the faculty at the Mannes School of Music, where she co-chairs the Winds Department, teaches bassoon, and leads improvisation workshops for classical musicians.
