Raf Simons Costume designer

Biography

Born in 1968 in Neerpelt, Belgium, Raf Simons graduated with a degree in industrial design in 1991. He began working as a furniture designer for galleries and private individuals. He completed an internship at the studio of fashion designer Walter Van Beirendonck.

Encouraged by Linda Loppa, director of the Fashion Department at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, he taught himself how to design menswear and launched his brand ‘Raf Simons’ in 1995. He designed menswear for Ruffo Research (spring-summer 1999 and autumn-winter 1999-2000).

From 2000 to 2005, he taught fashion at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna. From 2005 to 2012, he was creative director at Jil Sander (men's and women's clothing). In April 2011, he was president of the fashion jury at the 26th International Festival of Fashion and Photography in Hyères.

In 2012, he was appointed artistic director of Christian Dior for women's haute couture, ready-to-wear and accessories. From 2016 to 2018, he was creative director at Calvin Klein. In 2020, he was appointed co-creative director at Prada, working closely with Miuccia Prada and sharing responsibilities for creative input and decision-making.

Raf Simons has received numerous awards, including CFDA Designer of the Year for Calvin Klein (womenswear and menswear, 2017; womenswear, 2018), the Flemish Government's General Cultural Merit Award (2017) and BFC Designer of the Year (2017).
