Biography

Nicolas Paul trained at the École de Danse de l'Opéra national de Paris and joined the Corps de Ballet in 1996. He was promoted to Sujet in 2002 and has performed numerous roles, notably in works by Pina Bausch, Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, Maguy Marin, Sasha Waltz, and William Forsythe.

He has been a choreographer since 2001 and has created several works in France and abroad, including On peut toujours interpréter le vol des oiseaux (2001), Deux prisonniers, deux tortionnaires (2002), Akathisie (2003), Sonate en trio (2005), , Gesualdo (2006), In No Sens (Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris, 2011), Nobody on the Road (Korean National Ballet, 2012), and the danced parts of Platée (directed by Robert Carsen, Opéra Comique, 2014). The Martha Graham Dance Company, the Palais de Tokyo, and FIAC have invited him to create new works. He has also collaborated with directors such as Denis Podalydès and Houda Benyamina.

In 2019, he will participate in the creation of Degas Danse at the Musée d'Orsay for the Opera's 350^(th) anniversary. In 2023, he will choreograph L'Éternité immobile for the Bayerisches Staatsballett, and in 2024, he will choreograph Les Fêtes d'Hébé, directed by Robert Carsen, at the Opéra Comique.

His works at the Opéra national de Paris include Répliques (2009), D'ores et déjà (with Béatrice Massin, 2013), Quatre figures dans une pièce (2014), Sept mètres et demi au-dessus des montagnes (2017), Lamentation Variations (2018), the Renée Fleming gala (2022), Singularités plurielles (2023), and Ariodante (2023).
