Louisa Proske studied English literature at the University of Cambridge before training in stage direction at the Yale School of Drama. She is the co-founder and former co-artistic director of Heartbeat Opera, where she directed productions of Don Giovanni, Le Franc-tireur, Carmen, Lucia di Lammermoor, and Daphnis et Chloé. Her recent work includes Tosca at the Glimmerglass Festival, Serse and Amadigi di Gaula in Halle, Rusalka in Regensburg, Rinaldo in Detroit, and Le Roi Arthus at Bard.
From 2021 to 2024, she was deputy artistic director and director-in-residence at the Halle Opera, where she staged The Barber of Seville, Gypsy, Into the Woods, and Rigoletto. She received the Princess Grace Award in 2018 and was named Director of the Year by Opernwelt magazine in 2024. In theater, she has directed productions at the Red Bull Theatre in New York, the Barrington Stage Company, and the Assembly Theatre in Edinburgh.
During the 2025–2026 season, she will direct Lucia di Lammermoor in Erl, Primero Sueño by Paola Prestini and Magos Herrera in Mexico, On the Town by Bernstein at the Deutsche Oper am Rhein, and The Enchanted City by Samuel Penderbayne in Essen.
Debut at the Paris Opera.
