Born in Finland, Karita Mattila studied at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki with Liisa Linko-Malmio and, from 1984, with Vera Rozsa. She quickly established herself on major international opera stages.
She has participated in numerous contemporary music events, including the world premiere of Émilie by Kaija Saariaho at the Opéra National de Lyon. She was named Musical America's Musician of the Year in the United States (2005) and Chevalier des Arts et des Lettres in France (2003). In 2016, she received the Royal Philharmonic Society Award.
She has performed Kostelnicka (Jenůfa) at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, and the San Francisco Opera, Emilia Marty (L’Affaire Makropoulos) at the Helsinki Opera, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, and the BBC Proms, Sieglinde (Die Walküre) in Houston and San Francisco, Marie (Wozzeck) at the Royal Opera House in London, the title role of Ariadne auf Naxos at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich and the Royal Opera House in London, Plotina (Hadrian by Rufus Wainwright) at the Canadian Opera Company in Toronto, Madame de Croissy (Dialogues des Carmélites) at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, Leokadja Begbick (Grandeur and Decadence of the City of Mahagonny) at the Aix-en-Provence Festival, Ortrud (Lohengrin) at the Bayerische Staatsoper in Munich, and Herodias (Salome) at the Canadian Opera Company in Toronto and the Houston Grand Opera.
This season, she is performing Kostelnicka in London and Brno and the Foreign Princess (Rusalka) in Barcelona. Among her recordings, two have won Grammy Awards for Best Opera Recording: The Mastersingers of Nuremberg (1998) and Jenůfa (2004).
