Born in Bernburg (Saale), Germany, Jürgen Rose is a stage and costume designer whose work spans opera, ballet, and spoken theatre. He studied at the Berlin Academy of Fine Arts and the Berlin School of Dramatic Arts before beginning his career as assistant to director Gustav Rudolf Sellner at the Landestheater Darmstadt. He soon established himself as an independent designer.
He subsequently joined the Münchner Kammerspiele, where he designed sets and costumes for numerous productions from the classical repertoire, including plays by Shakespeare, Büchner, Chekhov, and Lessing. This period marked the beginning of a prolific and enduring career on Germany's leading stages.
A decisive turning point came in 1961, when he met choreographer John Cranko in Stuttgart. Their collaboration gave rise to a series of landmark productions, beginning with Romeo and Juliet. From then on, Jürgen Rose became one of the principal creative forces behind the international success of the Stuttgart Ballet, designing such iconic productions as Swan Lake, The Firebird, Onegin, and Poem of Ecstasy. Alongside his work in dance, he maintained an extensive career in theatre and opera, collaborating in particular with director Dieter Dorn.
From the 1990s onwards, Jürgen Rose expanded his artistic practice to include stage directing, personally directing several opera productions, including Don Carlos, Elektra, Lulu, and The Cunning Little Vixen. Alongside his creative career, he taught stage design at the Stuttgart State Academy of Art and Design from 1973 to 2000, training several generations of artists and making a lasting contribution to the development of contemporary scenography. At the Paris Opera, he notably directed Jules Massenet's Werther in 2009.
