Jorrell Lawyer-Jefferson holds a bachelor’s degree in music and a master’s degree in dance with a specialization in choreography from Sam Houston State University. He has worked with choreographers such as Jessica Lang, Tommie-Waheed Evans, Kirven Douthit-Boyd, Omar Román De Jesús, and Norbert De La Cruz III, among others. He has been a principal dancer in opera productions directed by Francesca Zambello, Rob Ashford (swing), Robert Wilson, and Barrie Kosky.
Since his debut as a choreographer at the Houston Grand Opera in Phelim McDermott’s production of Aida, he has continued to develop a gestural language unique to each operatic universe. His dual musical and athletic training has shaped his approach to movement, allowing him to constantly refine his choreographic voice through curiosity, self-discovery, and the integration of lived experience with imagination. He employs a wide range of media to enrich his daily practice, enabling art and philosophy to inform and inspire his work.
Debut at the Paris Opera.
