John B. Read has designed lighting all over the world, and his creations are regularly performed by the Royal Ballet in London. He has worked with major choreographers, including Sir Frederick Ashton, Sir Kenneth MacMillan, Sir Robert Cohan, Anthony Tudor, Glen Tetley, Jerome Robbins, Rudolf Nureyev, Anthony Dowell, David Bintley, Natalia Makarova, Christopher Bruce, Wayne Eagling, and Ashley Page.
He served as lighting consultant for the Royal Opera, the Royal Ballet, and the Birmingham Royal Ballet from 1992 to 2005, and continues to collaborate regularly with each of these companies. His works at the Royal Ballet include Romeo and Juliet (also in Lisbon, Tbilisi, Argentina, Queensland, Uruguay); Elite Syncopations (also in San Francisco); Coppélia; La Fille mal gardée (also in Munich); Manon (also in Rome, Budapest, Moscow, and Dresden); Mayerling (also in Budapest, Vienna, and Paris); Voluntaries (also in Oslo, Houston, Helsinki); Anastasia; Enigma Variations (also at Sarasota Ballet); Song of the Earth (also in Munich); Marguerite and Armand (also in Toronto, Bucharest, Vienna, Paris, and Moscow); La Bayadère (also in Oslo, Helsinki, Moscow, and La Scala); The Dream (also in Bucharest, Tokyo, Washington, and Dresden); Symphonic Variations; La Valse; Monotones I and II; Still Life at the Penguin Café (also in Tokyo); Raymonda; Les Patineurs; Le Prince des Pagodes; and the televised ballet tribute to Queen Elizabeth II, Fanfare for Elizabeth.
Other notable ballet productions include Communion for Robert Cohan; Swan Lake and The Nutcracker (Dutch National Ballet); The Rite of Spring (English National Ballet, La Scala, National Ballet of Prague, National Ballet of Korea, Dutch National Ballet); A Month in the Country (Birmingham Royal Ballet, American Ballet Theatre); and Manon (Paris Opera Ballet). He has also designed lighting for contemporary ballets with Ballet Rambert, London Contemporary Dance Theatre, and Scottish Ballet.
