Originally from New Hampshire, Joe Levasseur holds a degree in lighting design from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. Specializing in lighting and production for contemporary dance and performance, he has presented his work in the United States, Europe, and South America. From 2002 to 2010, he was touring lighting director for the John Jasperse Company, co-signing several pieces, including just two dancers, CALIFORNIA, Prone, Truth, Revised Histories… From 2009 to 2018, he was a key collaborator of Pavel Zuštiak and Palissimo.
Since 2009, he has worked closely with Big Dance Theater, designing the lighting for Comme Toujours Here I Stand, Kürbisgeist, Alan Smithee Directed This Play, The Mood Room, and 17c. He has created for Christopher Williams Dance (The Golden Legend, Narcissus—nominated for the Bessie Awards, Wolf-in-Skins, Les Sylphides, Jeux), and collaborated with Meredith Monk on Cellular Songs (BAM) and Indra’s Net (Park Avenue Armory).
Since 2012, he has taught lighting design in the Lang Dance program at The New School and has been lighting supervisor for the Trisha Brown Dance Company. His other projects include several productions at the Brick Theater, the opera ATTHIS by Georg Friedrich Haas, and Tom Sachs’s Space Program: MARS. He has also taught at Movement Research and overseen technical direction for CATS: The Jellicle Ball at PAC-NYC. As a visual artist, Joe Levasseur explores painting and sculpture: Drop Clock (New York Live Arts, 2009), an exhibition at PS122 (2010), and a mural for AUNTS (2013).
