Born in Kiel, Joachim Rathke studied opera directing in Berlin. He began his career as an assistant director at the Kiel Opera House, the Folkoperan in Stockholm, and then at the Frankfurt Opera, where he met Christoph Marthaler in 1996.
In 1998, he became the principal assistant director at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin. Since 2001, he has worked as a freelance director in Germany and internationally. His productions have been presented in Aachen, Regensburg, Kiel, Koblenz, Halle, Freiburg, Salzburg, Munich, Iowa City, the St. Moritz Opera Festival, and Dublin.
He collaborates regularly with Christoph Marthaler as co-director, notably at the Polish National Theatre in Warsaw, the Zurich Opera, the Salzburg Festival, Theater Basel, and the Hamburg State Opera. Alongside his work as a director, he teaches at the Hochschule für Musik in Leipzig, the Hochschule für Musik in Nuremberg, Mahidol University in Bangkok, and the Hochschule für Fernsehen und Film in Munich. He is also the author of two plays.
Debut at the Paris Opera.
