Choreographer, dancer, and General Artistic Director of the Noism Niigata company, Jō Kanamori arrived in Europe at the age of 17, where he studied under Maurice Béjart.
After completing his studies at the Rudra Béjart School in Lausanne, he made his debut as a choreographer at the age of 20 while enrolled in NDT2. After actively performing for 10 years as a dancer and choreographer with several dance companies in Europe, he returned to Japan.
In 2003, he won the Asahi Performing Arts Award for his performance no・mad・icproject ~ 7 fragments in memory. In April 2004, he was appointed Artistic Director of the dance division of RYUTOPIA and founded Noism, the first resident dance company of a public theater in Japan. He built a reputation through his innovative and creative works, as well as a series of productions created from his extensive experience abroad, including directing and choreographing an opera conducted by Seiji Ozawa at the Saito Kinen Festival in Matsumoto.
He has received numerous awards, including the Artistic Encouragement Prize from the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology in 2007, the Niigata Nippo Culture Prize in 2008, the 60th Mainichi Art Award, and the 42nd Tachibana Akiko Award.
