Active as a lighting designer since the 1980s, Jean-Claude Asquié created his first lighting designs in Brussels for the Ballet du XXe Siècle, directed by Maurice Béjart. After serving as production director for the Béjart Ballet Lausanne, for which he designed the lighting for Ring um der Ring at the Berlin Opera, he currently holds the same position at the Malandain Ballet Biarritz. He has also designed lighting for numerous opera and dance productions in France and abroad.
In addition, Jean-Claude Asquié exhibits his photography and installations. His exhibition Noureev le fou de danse has been shown in Biarritz, Paris, and San Sebastián. In Brussels, he presented images of New York, the United States, and South America. At the Galerie 41 Arte Contemporanea in Turin, he paid tribute to Roland Barthes with Dictionnaires – entre image et texte. From 2001 onward, he produced audio-video installations such as Una Tantum and Genova mon amour, focusing on the silent city of Genoa during the G8 summit.
Following a stay in New York after September 11, 2001, he created Ground Zéro, exhibited at Galerie Der Fuchsbau in Berlin. The video-installation Re-Creation offered a perspective on the dance–light–photography triptych, presented at the Magazzini dell’Abbondanza in Genoa. He also exhibited at Galerie Leonard IV-Idea as part of the Me-design – Genova2004 event, with an audio-video installation entitled Neuf/9 – neuf chants pour la paix.
