Born in Seattle, James Creswell made his debut in Los Angeles and San Francisco before joining the Komische Oper Berlin, where he has performed roles such as Sarastro (The Magic Flute), Prince Gremin (Eugene Onegin) and Figaro (The Marriage of Figaro). In recent years, he has performed roles including Truelove (The Rake's Progress) and Sarastro (The Magic Flute) at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, Fafner (Das Rheingold), The Commendatore (The Handmaid's Tale) and the Police Sergeant (The Pirates of Penzance) at the English National Opera, Nourbad (The Pearl Fishers) at Opera North, Vodník (Rusalka) and Charon (L'Orfeo) at the Santa Fe Opera, Rocco (Fidelio) at the Amsterdam National Opera, Daland (The Flying Dutchman) at Dublin Opera and Jacopo Fiesco (Simon Boccanegra) at Grange Park Opera. During the 2025-2026 season, he will play Swallow (Peter Grimes) at Opera North, among other roles.
