Born in Paris in 1951, Jacques Chatelet studied electroacoustics at the University of Vincennes. This training led him to work as a sound engineer and recording studio installer for several companies, including Radio France.
He later became sound and lighting stage manager, then technical director, for a number of dance and theatre companies. In 1982, he turned more specifically toward lighting design for theatre, opera, ballet, and musical theatre. He gained wide recognition in the field of dance, working in particular with Dominique Bagouet, Françoise Adret, Angelin Preljocaj, Catherine Diverrès, Jacques Dombrowski, Blanca Li, and Anne-Marie Porras.
His career has taken him to all the major international stages. He has also been called upon to collaborate on major events, such as the Euro 2000 ceremonies in Belgium and the Biennale des Antiquaires at the Louvre in 2002. At the Paris National Opera, he created the lighting for Le Parc (1994) and Annonciation (1995), two ballets by Angelin Preljocaj, as well as for Shéhérazade, a creation by Blanca Li (2001).
