Biography

George Gagnidze was born in Tiflis (Georgia). He has performed at many of the great international opera houses (the New York Metropolitan Opera, Milan’s La Scala, the San Francisco Opera, the Vienna Staatsoper…) under the baton of conductors such as James Levine, Lorin Maazel, Zubin Mehta, Fabio Luisi, James Conlon, Plácido Domingo, Mikko Franck, Jesús López-Cobos, Nicola Luisotti, Daniel Oren, Gianandrea Noseda, Kirill Petrenko, and Yuri Temirkanov.
His repertoire includes the principal roles of Italian opera: Alfio (Cavalleria rusticana), Tonio (Pagliacci), Scarpia (Tosca), Carlo Gérard (Andrea Chénier), Barnaba (La Gioconda), Renato (Un ballo in maschera), Germont (La Traviata), Jago (Otello), Amonasro (Aida), and the title roles in Nabucco, Rigoletto, Simon Boccanegra, Falstaff and Macbeth. He also performs the Russian repertoire: Mazeppa, Tomsky (The Queen of Spades), Chaklovity (Khovanshchina). Over the last few seasons he has sung in Aida at Milan’s La Scala, New York’s Metropolitan Opera, the Paris Opera, the San Francisco Opera and the Teatro Real in Madrid, Nabucco (title role) in a new production at the Verona Arena, Rigoletto at the Los Angeles Opera, the Metropolitan Opera and the Deutsche Oper in Berlin, Pagliacci and Cavalleria rusticana at the Metropolitan Opera and the Hamburg Staatsoper, Otello with the les Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl, Khovanshchina at the BBC Proms, Andrea Chénier at the San Francisco Opera, and La Gioconda, Andrea Chénier and Tosca at the Deutsche Oper in Berlin. He also appeared in Tosca at Milan’s La Scala, New York’s Metropolitan Opera (DVD), the Paris Opera, the Vienna Staatsoper, the Berlin Staatsoper and the Teatro Real in Madrid; Simon Boccanegra (title role) in Valencia and Bilbao; Rigoletto at the Los Angeles Opera, the Wiener Festwochen, Milan’s La Scala, Tokyo’s NHK Hall and the Aix Festival; Macbeth and Khovanshchina at the Metropolitan Opera; Cavalleria rusticana and Pagliacci at the Liceu in Barcelona and the Metropolitan Opera; La Traviata at Milan’s La Scala and the Verona Arena; Cavalleria rusticana, Tosca and Nabucco at the Vienna Staatsoper; Otello (Jago) at the Hamburg Staatsoper and the Athens Festival; Nabucco at the Chorégies d’Orange; Aida at Milan’s La Scala (DVD); Falstaff (title role) at the New National Theatre of Tokyo and Francesca da Rimini at the Paris Opera.
