Born in London, conductor Finnegan Downie Dear studied at the University of Cambridge and the Royal Academy of Music. He gained international recognition after winning the 2020 Mahler Competition, in both the symphonic and operatic repertoire. His recent operatic engagements include his debut at the Opéra national de Lyon (Billy Budd), his return to the Royal Ballet and Opera (The Magic Flute) and to the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin (Don Giovanni).
In concert, he has conducted the Staatskapelle Dresden, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra, the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, the Gürzenich Orchestra of Cologne, the Swedish Chamber Orchestra, the Bremer Philharmoniker, the Kammerakademie Potsdam and the Athens State Orchestra.
He has also toured with the Balthasar Neumann Orchestra in Baden-Baden and at the Elbphilharmonie. He is Artistic Director of Shadwell Opera, a London-based company dedicated to contemporary British repertoire. During the 2025–2026 season, he conducts The Turn of the Screw in Berlin and makes his debut at Garsington Opera with Der Rosenkavalier.
