Ellen Ruge was born in Oslo and lives in Stockholm. Trained as a photographer, she has designed lighting for a large number of productions in theatre, opera, and ballet. She has also created artistic installations for public buildings in Scandinavia, across Europe, in the United States, Cuba, China, the United Kingdom, and Japan.
Among the opera productions she has worked on are Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, The Turn of the Screw, Rigoletto, The Magic Flute, Così fan tutte, The Marriage of Figaro, Turandot, The Merry Widow, Un ballo in maschera, Stiffelio, Il trovatore, Madama Butterfly, Carmen, Wozzeck, Nixon in China, Tristan and Isolde, Don Giovanni, Brothers, Ariadne auf Naxos, Tosca, Salome, L’elisir d’amore, and Peter Grimes. In ballet, she has notably designed lighting for She was black, Women with Water, and A sort of... by Mats Ek.
She was awarded the King of Sweden’s Gold Medal with blue ribbon for her contribution to the Swedish performing arts in 2019, the Swedish Theatre Critics’ Award for lighting design in 2020, and the award for Best Commissioned Light Art in Stockholm in 2021.
