Biography

Mezzo-soprano Elizabeth DeShong has appeared on the world's major opera stages, including the Metropolitan Opera, San Francisco Opera, Barcelona's Gran Teatre del Liceu, Chicago's Lyric Opera, Naples' Teatro di San Carlo, Los Angeles Opera, Toronto's Canadian Opera Company, London's Royal Opera House, Vienna's Staatsoper, Milan's La Scala, the Opéra national de Bordeaux, the Glyndebourne Festival, and the Festival d'Aix-en-Provence. In recent seasons, she has made debuts in numerous roles, including Octavia in the world premiere of John Adams' Antony and Cleopatra at San Francisco Opera, Fricka (L'Or du Rhin) at Atlanta Opera, Azucena (Le Trouvère) at Stuttgart Opera, and Medoro (Orlando) at the Théâtre du Châtelet.

She has also played Bradamante (Alcina), Calbo (Maometto II), Suzuki (Madame Butterfly), Paulina (The Queen of Spades), Adalgisa (Norma), Hänsel (Hänsel and Gretel), Juno and Ino (Sémélé), Maffia Orsini (Lucrèce Borgia), Marilyn Klinghoffer (The Death of Klinghoffer), Fenena (Nabucco), Sesto (La Clémence de Titus), Ruggiero (Alcina), Arsace (Semiramide), Fides (The Prophet), Hermia (A Midsummer Night's Dream). Recent recordings include Handel's Alcina with Marc Minkowski and Les Musiciens du Louvre (Pentatone), Meyerbeer's Le Prophète live from Aix-en-Provence (Presto Music), Mercadante's Il proscritto with Opera Rara (Warner Classics). His recording of Handel's Messiah with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra under Sir Andrew Davis (Chandos) was nominated for two 2018 Grammy Awards.
