Biography

Born in 1980, Carlos J. Soto is a New York–based designer. Since 1997, he has collaborated with Robert Wilson—working on Der Messias in Salzburg, I Was Sitting on My Patio This Guy Appeared I Thought I Was Hallucinating and Bach 6 Solo (with Lucinda Childs) at the Festival d’Automne, and Einstein on the Beach at Théâtre du Châtelet—and with Solange Knowles as artistic director and designer for installations, live performances, and films.

His recent work includes Robin Hood: A Beast Ballad at Schauspielhaus Zürich, The Seasons at Boston Opera, La Calisto at Glimmerglass Festival, Tosca at Wermland Opera, Intelligence at Houston Grand Opera, L’Orfeo and Tristan und Isolde at Santa Fe Opera, and Die Walküre at Detroit Opera. During the 2025–2026 season, he is collaborating with Wu Tsang on Carmen & Carmen at NTGent, Zack Winokur on The Black Clown at Philadelphia Opera, and Daniel Kramer on 200 Motels at Grand Théâtre de Genève and La Cenerentola at La Monnaie in Brussels.

Debut at the Paris Opera.
