The Cunning Little Vixen
Leoš Janáček
Opéra Bastille
from january 15 to february 01, 2025
It’s no easy matter taming a vixen! The gamekeeper, who introduces one into his household, learns this the hard way, especially as the animal in question is particularly cunning, feminist and even revolutionary, calling on the hens in the barnyard to revolt against the cockerel and “forge a new world”! Alas, while freedom allows her to find love, the little vixen will pay a high price...
In 17th-century England, just after the beheading of Charles I, the supporters of the republican Cromwell – the Puritans – are rejoicing at Elvira’s forthcoming marriage to Arturo, despite the fact that he is a royalist. But when the young Cavalier discovers the identity of the prisoner guarded by the Puritans, everything is turned upside down…
From Pushkin’s verse novel Eugene Onegin, a seminal work of 19th-century Russian literature, John Cranko has created a ballet centred around five characters: the poet Lenski, sweet Olga’s fiancé; Tatiana, her older sister, in love with the dandy Onegin, who neglects her before realising, far too late, when she marries Prince Gremin, that he has wasted his life.
