Jianhong Zhao was born in Datong, China. He began his career in traditional Chinese opera in Datong. He studied theater and music at the Beijing Theater Institute, then continued his studies at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. He then joined the Shanghai Opera, where he began his career as a soloist, performing the roles of Count Capulet (Romeo and Juliet), Escamillo (Carmen) and Alfio (Cavalleria rusticana). He completed his studies in Europe at the École normale de musique, where he won his singing and interpretation prizes unanimously, with congratulations from the jury. He sang the role of Zuniga (Carmen) at the Porto Opera and took part in several concerts at the Vienna Musikverein and in Salzburg. He joined the Opéra national de Paris Chorus in 2000.
