Massimo Bogianckino studied at the Santa Cecilia conservatory (Italy) and graduated in musicology. He taught piano in Pittsburgh (1950-1951) and then returned in Italy to work at the Pesaro conservatory. He then conducted the Accademia Filarmonica Romana from 1960 to 1963. Bogianckino chose then to teach musicology at the University of Perugia. He became Artistic Director of the Rome Opera, then head of La Scala (1972-1975), of the Teatro comunale and of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino festival (1976-1982). He replaced Bernard Lefort at the Paris Opera direction, and the temporary management team composed by Paul Puaux, Jean-Pierre Leclerc, Alain Lombard and Georges-François Hirsch, becoming three centuries after Lully the second Italian Director of the theatre. He is famous for the world premiere of Saint François d'Assise by Olivier Messiaen at the Palais Garnier. His artistic choices included mainly works from the 19th century French repertoire (Robert the Devil, Meyerbeer), hardly presented before and after him. He also welcomed new productions (e.g., Hippolytus and Aricia, Rameau, Alceste, Gluck, The Stone Guest, Alexandre Dargomyjskiainsi) as well as original works (Docteur Faustus by Konrad Boehmer and The Foam of Days by Edison Denisov). Massimo Bogianckino left the Paris Opera in 1985 to dedicate himself wholly to politics in Italy and was elected Mayor of Florence the same year.
