The day that Maria Callas sang Norma at the Paris Opera.

55 years ago, in 1964, Maria Callas was singing Norma, conducted by Georges Prêtre, for the very first time at the Palais Garnier.

The premiere is tomorrow evening. The Paris Opera hosts a major production: Norma from Bellini, staring Maria Callas. We attended the last rehearsal on stage at the Palais Garnier. This is one of the most beautiful works of the Italian repertoire and Georges Prêtre conducts the orchestra and the chorus of the Paris Opera. Maria Callas interprets Norma with talent and an outstanding authority. She reveals a strong and romantic woman, as the role was described in Bellini’s music and Romani’s libretto and played for the first time in 1831 at La Scala, in Milan.
