Renowned for his unconventional approach towards the works he stages, Dmitri Tcherniakov’s productions are marked by an emphasis on directing actors and an in-depth rereading of the text and its subject matter. Born in Moscow, he has received the Golden Mask (Russia’s national drama prize) on several occasions. He also doubles as the stage and costume designer for most of his productions. Western audiences first discovered his work in 2008 with Eugene Onegin at the Palais Garnier (the Bolshoi Theatre, which had produced the production, came with its own orchestra and singers). The following year his production of Macbeth, first performed in Novosibirsk, was staged at the Opera Bastille. With Iolanta / The Nutcracker in 2016, he directed his first production created specifically for the Paris Opera. He staged the two works together in the same evening, proposing a surprising reinterpretation of the ballet, far removed from the fairy-tale that hitherto had generally been presented. That production was followed by Rimsky-Korsakov’s The Snowmaiden in 2017. That same year, at the Aix Festival, he transformed Bizet’s Carmen into an experimental therapy session in the form of a role-playing game. He then went on to revisit Tristan und Isolde at the Berlin Staatsoper in a profoundly contemporary and realistic light.
