Director

Sergei Loznitsa was born and raised in Ukraine. In 1987 he obtained his diploma in Applied Mathematics from the Kyiv Polytechnic Institute. He then worked as a researcher specialized in artificial intelligence at the Institute of Cybernetics in Kiev.
In 1997 he graduated from the The Gerasimov Institute of Cinematography (Russia, Moscow) where he studied film direction. Since 2018 he has made 18 documentary films awarded all around the world and three fictional feature movies, all selected for the Cannes Festival competition (My joy in 2010, Just a Breath Away in 2012, A Gentle Creature in 2017). Donbass, his fourth full feature film, was selected as the opening film in the Un Certain Regard section at the 2018 Cannes Film Festival. Beginning of 2020 a retrospective is organized at the Centre Pompidou in Paris.
