Synopsis
Throughout his career, Antonin Dvořák composed for the voice, particularly, popularly inspired pieces in his mother tongue including his Moravian Duets with their limpid, rhythmic melisma, tinged with melancholy. Dvořák also drew inspiration from other traditional popular sources, in particular, for his Gypsy Songs—heart-rending, aggrieved reflections of an age-old culture of central Europe. In counterpoint to these songs, the Academy’s musicians will perform a few pages of the composer’s chamber music.
