Building a sustainable development strategy

Building a strategy for a sustainable development at the Opera.

  • Define a comprehensive sustainable development strategy that includes the Opera in the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals
  • Quickly acquire the first elements of measurement and decision-making (carbon footprint, energy audit, production life cycle analysis)
  • Implementing specific actions to reduce the carbon footprint

The project

The Opera wishes to initiate a Sustainable Development policy in line with the objectives of the 2030 Agenda defined by the United Nations, which will include the implementation of concrete actions to measure the overall environmental impact of our activity, monitoring indicators and defining improvement objectives.

Among the first measures :

  • Implementation of a sustainable development awareness policy for our employees, our artists, our suppliers and our audience.
  • Creation of an environmental governance with a cell representing each department.
  • Improving our sorting, recycling and reuse policy, for a massive reduction of waste production and integration of a circular economy policy.
  • Creation of specific tools for the modernisation of our ordering system, stock management and for the eco-design of our productions.

Did you know?

  • The Opera is already taking action on environmental issues ! Our electricity consumption has decreased by 15% between 2010 and 2019, our water consumption by 30% between 2009 and 2019.
  • Since 2016 100% of the electricity purchased is from renewable sources.
  • 50% of the products offered by our canteen are of local origin (by 2022 20% of them will be from organic farming).
  • The roofs of the Opéra Bastille are now cultivated using agro-ecology (which also contributes to the thermal insulation of the building), producing around a hundred weekly baskets of fruit and vegetables which are sold to employees and local residents.
  • A large part of the stage lighting equipment is being replaced with LED equipment.
