Jean-Stéphane Bron roamed backstage at the Paris Opera for sixteen months to shoot the documentary “L’Opéra”. Released in 2017 in over 15 countries, the film recently received the Swiss Film Award. However, one domain remained unexplored by the director: that of the Orchestra.
The Paris Opera's 3 Scène invited the director to return to the Opéra Bastille with his camera. “Vers le silence” (Towards Silence) focuses on the Orchestra's work during rehearsals of Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 9, shedding light on the relationship between the musicians and their conductor, Philippe Jordan, that enables them to so perfectly perform the Viennese composer's swan song.
In this interview, Jean-Stéphane Bron discusses Philippe Jordan's charisma, the voracious gaze of documentary filmmakers, and his experience of the 3e Scène.
