Woman of theatre Julie Deliquet has directed Ingmar Bergman's Fanny et Alexandre at the Comédie-Française and adapted Arnaud Desplechin's film, Un conte de Noël, for the stage. The 3e Scene's carte blanche offers the stage director an opportunity to make her film directing debut. Following the heroine of Verdi's La Traviata, she draws an unexpected and moving parallel between the labyrinthine Opéra Bastille and the mazes of the Gustave Roussy Hospital. Violetta mirrors the journey through life of the celebrated role, performed by Aleksandra Kurzak, and the story of a woman following a chemotherapy protocol. In this interview, Julie Deliquet discusses this double incarnation of disease, both documentary and fictional, as well as her vision of theatres and hospitals as places where dramas and resurrections are played out.
