Don Carlo: Love and Sacrifice

Cross-interview with Aleksandra Kurzak and Roberto Alagna — By Konstantinos Aspiotis and Coline Delreux

In October 2017, the Paris Opera presented the French version of Don Carlos, a production by Krzysztof Warlikowski. This season, the same production adapted to the Italian version by the director will be given on the Bastille Opera stage. Roberto Alagna and Aleksandra Kurzak will interpret, from October 25 to November 11, the star-crossed lovers Don Carlo and Elisabetta Di Valois, reviving this impressive historical adventure imagined by Schiller. Drawing his inspiration from the French “Grand Opera”, Verdi composed one of his darkest works, where history becomes, one more time, a way to dive into his heroes’ inner life, powerless characters under the burden of their responsabilities.
