Wig makers and make up artists

The Académie de l’Opéra national de Paris offers a training program to young artists and craftspeople at the beginning of their careers. It includes singers, musicians, pianist and vocal coaches, stage directors, dressmakers, make-up artists, tailors, carpenters… The goal of the Académie is to promote a new generation of artists and craftspeople by allowing them to specialise and to discover other professions of the Opera.
Concerning the craft component, the mission of the Académie is to prepare young artisan to their future working conditions in the following fields: costume designing, wig designing, composite materials, carpentry, upholstery or engineer at the designing office.
Thus, residents from a technical or traditional background will complete their training supported by members of the Opéra national de Paris, with an exceptional expertise. The training program also includes specific modules depending of the disciplines (for example, textile recognition, lighting design) and allows to discover the functioning of the Opera by attending rehearsals of operas productions or Ballets

Activities of the craftspeople

  • Professional experience in the different workshops (costume making, wig designing, composite materials, carpentry, upholstery and engineering at the designing office);
  • Participation in lyric creations, concerts and recitals bringing together all the artists in residence, presented at the Amphitheatre and in the Studio of the Opéra Bastille, as part of the artistic programming of the Académie;
  • Specialisation modules and/or design of prototypes with the support of a permanent member of the Opera de Paris crafts (depending of the discipline);
  • Security trainings needed to integrate the workshop (depending of the discipline);
  • Theoric seminaries on themes related to the Opera (such as color, scenography of the XXth et XXIst century, video in stage directing);
  • Periods of internships in others workshops of the Opera or partner institutions to discover others working methods;
  • Attending master-classes organized by the Academie;
  • Attending rehearsals of the Ballet and the Orchestra.

Profile of the candidates:

For the 2019-2020 season, we are looking for 3 wig and makeup desinger.
A first professional experience in the performing arts sector is a plus.

Enrolment conditions (cumulative conditions)

  • Applicants must be at least 18 years old and no more than 29 years old on September 1st, 2019;
  • Applicants must have a diploma or an equivalent, according to their specialty;
  • A pre-selection on dossier can be done;
  • Deadline for registration on line: February 10th 2019. No applications by email or letters will be accepted

Conditions of residency at the Academie

Duration of residency: 10 months – from September 1st 2019 to June 30th 2020.
Craftspeople are engaged in “contrat de professionnalisation” and will be paid a monthly salary of 80% of the SMIC (French minimum wage) if they are under 26 years old. Residents aged 26 or above will be paid a monthly salary of 1522 euros (before taxes).
No fees will be levied.

Interview

Selection will be based on the candidate’s application (Curriculum Vitae + letter of motivation), followed by an interview. The jury includes the chief of the workshop concerned and the management team of the Academie.
