Over the last few seasons, the soprano Ricarda Merbeth – who began her career in Bayreuth with Wolfgang Wagner – has provided us with some unforgettable moments on the stage of the Bastille: as Marietta in Korngold’s Die Tote Stadt, as Sieglinde in Die Walküre or again in the title role of Strauss’s Ariadne auf Naxos. In the timespan of a recital, she rediscovers a few of those composers for a programme with an Art Nouveau or Jurgendstil flavour to recreate a forever-lost Vienna in which the dying embers of romanticism were succumbing to the march of modernity.
