Concerts and performances at the Amphithéâtre
Schönberg / Mantovani
Presentation

With Carnaval, Bruno Mantovani has created a new opus for the Ensemble InterContemporain, London’s Wigmore Hall and the Bastille Amphitheatre. For this concert, the new work will be complemented by two masterpieces by Schönberg:  Webern's arrangement of the vertiginous Kammersymphonie op. 9 and the legendary Pierrot lunaire. Based on the poems of Albert Giraud, this ground-breaking cycle was composed in 1912 for a single voice and five instruments. Schönberg elevates a new language somewhere between the spoken word and song to its apogee, giving rise to a form of poetry that is at once intense and tragic, playful and spellbinding.
