Les Heures dolentes
Gabriel Dupont / Claude Debussy

This tribute to Gabriel Dupont, who passed away in 1914, presents a work whose scale sets it far from the usual conventions of the concert: Les Heures dolentes, a cycle for piano of over one hour. Composing at the time of Fauré and Debussy, Dupont appealed to a sensibility of a different hue. The cycle includes highly impressionistic passages, very delicate, very French, but also moments of "long black sleep" to use the words of Verlaine. A student of Massenet and Widor, Gabriel Dupont died before finishing his opera Antar, which the Paris Opera first performed posthumously in 1921. Nicolas Stavy will perform the vast cycle of Les Heures dolentes in its entirety and this remarkable collection of fourteen pieces will be preceded by three of the composer's chœurs as well as a rare masterpiece by  Debussy, La Damoiselle élue.
