The Educational Programmes
Dix mois d’École et d’Opéra
(Ten Months of School and Opera)
MRun in association with the Ministry of National Education since 1991, Ten Months of School and Opera plays a central role in our educational programme.
It primarily addresses young pupils attending schools in priority education areas in the Parisian suburbs, (the regional education authorities of Creteil, Paris and Versailles) who have difficulty in gaining access to cultural places.
Promoting equal opportunities by raising awareness to the arts and culture
Through contact with the numerous professions involved in the theatre and artistic creation, it aims to reduce inequality in opportunities, to foster a civic sense and guide each young person along the road to success.
Each educational team sets up a project with its pupils, linking the class and the Opera, and determines its educational goals. The educational project is based on various visits, research, encounters and work undertaken at the Palais Garnier and the Opéra Bastille over a two-year period.
The programme culminates in the publication of a diary, the organisation of exhibitions and the presentation of a performance assembling about 150 children at the Opera Bastille Amphitheatre.
The "Dis-moi l’Europe" ("Tell me, Europe" Project)
Since 2007-2008, this programme has opened its doors to Europe. Further to the performance “From Verona or elsewhere...” which assembled 90 young people from France, Hungary, Italy and Holland, the first European magazine, “Tell me, Europe”, will be published in 2009.
A second European project should take place during the 2009/2010 season in partnership with other European cities like London, Milan and Barcelona.
New awareness-raising activities in 2009
In order to complete the pupils’ artistic training programme, a “musical class” should commence as early as September 2009, making it possible over a three-year period for pupils from the same primary school class to learn the preliminaries for playing a musical instrument.
These pupils will be able to benefit from Master Classes with professional musicians from the Opera and the most motivated amongst them could be sent to their local conservatoire at the end of the three years.
As early as 2009, each class in the Ten Months of School and Opera will benefit from practical artistic workshops.
The Young Audience Series
Each season this series offers around sixty performances (operas, ballets, concerts, recitals or demonstrations) intended for new audiences, particularly young ones, aiming to heighten their appreciation of the unique experience of live performance.
This great diversity in performances makes it possible to discover and enjoy a large spectrum of music and dance: baroque, hip-hop, contemporary, jazz, musical comedy, classic operas…
Workshops and educational activities are on offer to help teachers prepare the pupils for the performances: encounters with the production’s artists, preparatory kits, workshops for raising awareness in the classrooms. A la carte presentations are also organised in collaboration with teachers.
Practical artistic workshops are also organised for families giving the children the possibility to discover with their parents the artistic universe of a director, choreographer, actor, singer and/or dancer.
A total of nearly 20 000 spectators attend the Young Audience performances each year.
