La Chute de la Maison Usher
UNFINISHED OPERAS BY CLAUDE DEBUSSY
AFTER TWO NOVELLAS BY EDGAR ALLAN POE
In 1908, further to the success of the premiere of Pelleas and Melisande, the director of the Metropolitan Opera in New York commissioned an opera from Claude Debussy, inspired by a short story by Edgar Allan Poe, the inventor of fantasy literature in the United States. Debussy finally chose two short stories and worked for several years on what was to be a two-part opera, but he died before it was completed. On alternate dates to the Pelleas and Melisande performances at the Bastille, the Amphitheatre proposes the discovery of these two unknown and fragmented works, which nevertheless reveal the very quintessence of Debussy’s genius.
